Earth Day 2026

Every year on 22 April, Earth Day reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect the planet. At NextEnergy Group, this is part of everything we do.

That’s why we are launching Sustainability in Action: an initiative that brings our sustainability culture to life through the everyday actions of our people.

The power of our people

Over recent months, we have strengthened our focus on sustainability across our offices, recognising that how we work should reflect what we stand for.

At the heart of the initiative are our Sustainability Champions: colleagues across the Group who act as local ambassadors for more sustainable ways of working.

Working closely with Office Managers, they:

  • Encourage greener habits
  • Gather ideas and feedback
  • Lead initiatives to reduce waste, improve recycling and save energy

This is a collective effort, designed to be simple, collaborative and inclusive – empowering everyone to contribute, share ideas and drive change together.

I was in my last year at school and the documentary “A Plastic Ocean” came out. I remember everyone talking about it, and it felt like a turning point for people to realise that every small action to become more conscious in our consumption and waste choices count. I started trying to buy fruit and veg without plastic packaging and always bringing my own bags to the supermarket. I also stopped buying plastic bottles and have bought re-usable bottles for everyone in my family!

During university, while preparing for my Energy Economics exam back in 2009, I decided that I wanted to work in the renewable energy sector. It was the moment I fully realised how much energy shapes the world — for better or for worse. I remember thinking that if I was going to spend eight hours a day working, it should be for a cause I genuinely believed in.

Close to my home in Hyderabad, I can see the impacts of resource depletion first hand - the widespread use of individual borewells has depleted groundwater levels, causing severe summer water shortages and increasing environmental strain, highlighting the need for more shared and efficient use of resources.

On Earth Day 2017, I joined a reef cleanup dive off Koh Tao in southern Thailand. What we found was overwhelming - tyres, masks, bottles, bags, and tangled fishing lines woven deep into the coral. Some debris was so embedded it couldn’t be removed without causing more harm. Seeing it firsthand revealed the true weight of human pressure - especially from tourism and fishing when left unchecked. Beneath the surface, hidden from view, the damage was far greater than I’d imagined, shaped by an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude that leaves fragile reefs to quietly suffer.

Being close to a flood in Greece in 2023 profoundly changed how I think about sustainability and climate resilience. In the global context of natural disasters, it was a very small event, but it was the closest and most significant climate-related event in my personal life. It was the first time I actually saw cars floating in water like little boats. Witnessing how the town struggled with damaged homes, disrupted livelihoods and a long recovery, it made the impact feel very real. What affected me most was the long lasting psychological toll on people: the stress, uncertainty and loss of a sense of safety. It made sustainability feel personal and urgent, not just an abstract or distant issue.

“Reducing unnecessary waste where possible is one simple action every colleague could start tomorrow, this could mean simple changes such as not taking disposable cutlery when getting takeaway when there is cutlery already in the office.

From responsible sourcing to reducing office impact, our commitment guides our decisions at every level. A strong example is our Milan office, which has pioneered sustainable procurement practices and set a benchmark across the Group, showing how local actions can inspire wider change.
